My film ‘Lucky Dog’ is a 21 minute 2D animated musical satire about immigration and privilege.
It is loosely based on my attempts to relocate to Canada. In 2016, I was denied a visa after securing admission to a reputed animation program in Vancouver. I had my whole career mapped out and was taken aback when my student visa did not come through due to a technicality.
I couldn’t help but envy my friends and family who managed to go abroad without as much trouble. One of them immigrated to Canada with their cats and I knew my feelings could be mined for comedy when I became jealous of their pets!
Then 2020 happened and I was forced to confront my privilege. Being sheltered in place and employed during the pandemic made me realise how fortunate I was. My disappointments and setbacks paled in comparison to people who struggled to make ends meet.
In making Lucky Dog, I worked through my conflicting emotions on the themes of the film. I believe it brings a unique perspective to the conversation about immigration that will resonate with a diverse audience.
