In the calm surroundings of my London home, it is easy to get distracted and conditioned into thinking that the effects of war in a distant land only impact my pocket.
Oil prices go up, therefore it costs more to fill my car with petrol or fly on a foreign holiday. Food prices go up because grain cannot leave a producing country because of a war.
Politicians puff chests, inflation starts to go up all because of the war.
It is not until you are fully submerged into the physical locality of the war that you immediately realise that the true cost of the war is death. The loss of loved ones, friends and soldiers.
First world problems can invariably be resolved and repaired. The loss of life is permanent and can never be replaced. This is the true cost of war.
