Splitting the Mind

Directed by Anna Biernacik · Poland · 6 min · short · narrative

"Empathy is a proper way of emptying a mind, in such a way so that we can listen with the entirety of our being." Such connection can allow us to overcome a great, mental pain. However, usually instead of empathy, what grows inside of us, is a need to give advice, cheer others up or to clarify our position. “Splitting the Mind”, shows us an excerpt from a life of a young adult who at the verge of dealing with reality, looks for support from his mother.

From the director

In “Splitting The Mind” I look into the behaviour and emotions that accompany the family of a schizophrenic person.

The goal of the film is to understand the mechanisms, that make it difficult for the sick person to get well or to at least try living in a more bearable manner. Therapy for members of the family of a schizophrenic person Is one of the key parts of improving the state of health of a patient. Considering the importance and peculiarity of keeping his lifestyle an adequate one, cooperating with his close ones can be of great significance.

Properly trained family members can have a major role in detecting the early symptoms of recurrence of the disorder, and in implementing common strategies to prevent its aggravation.
